Iwi

Ngāti Rangitihi is a significant Te Arawa iwi. According to the last census, our population was 2,298 members. However, as part of our Treaty negotiations, statistician Len Cook undertook comprehensive research into our tribe and concluded that our population was closer to 9,500.

We believe that we are a significant iwi with customary rights and interests stretching from the coast at Matata, up the Tarawera awa to include Lake Tarawera, across Ruawahia and out across Rerewhakaitu including the Rotomahana, Rerewhakaitu and Okaaro lakes, and out into the Kaingaroa Forest.
